Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini

Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini are the three assistants most people shortlist in 2026, and at the $20 level their prices are almost identical. So the choice comes down to what each plan bundles, how each handles coding, and which ecosystem you already use. This page compares all three on those terms, without benchmark tables that age in weeks.

Prices were checked on October 24, 2026 on claude.com/pricing, Google’s Gemini subscriptions page and OpenAI’s Codex pricing page, which lists ChatGPT plans. US prices, before tax; they change often. Claudekit.ai is independent and not affiliated with Anthropic, OpenAI or Google.

Three things stand out:

  1. The $20 tier is a three-way tie on price. Pick on features.
  2. Claude has no budget tier between Free and $20. ChatGPT Go and Google AI Plus fill that gap for their users.
  3. Power tiers line up at $100 and $200. Claude Max, ChatGPT Pro and Google AI Ultra all scale usage roughly 5x and 20x; ChatGPT adds a $500 tier.

Our Claude pricing guide details every Claude plan, and Claude Pro vs Max helps decide whether the bigger tier is worth it.

Free tiers compared

All three free plans are good enough to judge which assistant you prefer before paying.

If you’re testing coding specifically, note the asymmetry: ChatGPT Free and Gemini CLI let you try their coding agents at no cost, while Claude Code needs at least Claude Pro. Budget one month of Pro for a fair comparison.

Coding: three different philosophies

Claude Code is an agent first. It runs in your terminal or IDE, reads the repo, runs commands and edits files, and you extend it with skills, subagents, hooks, plugins and MCP servers. It needs Claude Pro or higher.

OpenAI Codex comes with ChatGPT plans from Free upwards: Free is for “quick coding tasks”, Go for “lightweight coding tasks”, and Plus adds Codex on web, CLI, IDE and iOS. Pro plans currently have no five-hour limits, per OpenAI’s page. Our Claude Code vs Codex comparison goes deep.

Google splits coding across Gemini CLI (open source, free daily quota), Jules (an asynchronous coding agent) and Antigravity (an agentic development platform). See Claude Code vs Gemini CLI.

If coding is your main reason to subscribe, the honest advice is: try Codex on ChatGPT Free and Gemini CLI on its free quota, then spend $20 on a month of Claude Pro with Claude Code. Run the same real task in all three and keep the one whose diffs you trust. Our Claude vs ChatGPT for coding has a test checklist.

Writing, research and analysis

All three handle drafting, summarising and analysis well; differences show up in tone, how closely each follows long instructions, and how it handles your documents.

  • Claude is popular for long-form writing and careful analysis. Projects keep shared files and instructions, and Artifacts turn outputs into documents or small apps.
  • ChatGPT is a broad generalist with a long feature list; check OpenAI’s pricing page for exactly which features each tier includes today.
  • Gemini offers Deep Research on every plan including Free, Gemini Notebook for working over sources, and uploads of up to 1,500 pages on paid plans.

Run the same three prompts from your real work through each free tier before paying. Our Claude prompting best practices apply to all three.

Ecosystem fit

Often the deciding factor isn’t the model but where your work lives:

  • Microsoft 365 users: Claude Pro includes Microsoft 365 integration.
  • Google Workspace users: Gemini sits inside Gmail, Docs and Drive.
  • Developers who want to connect their own tools: Claude’s MCP support across Claude Code and the apps makes it easy to plug in GitHub, databases or browsers. See the MCP servers guide.

Who should choose which

Choose Claude if you code daily and want a configurable agent, you value careful long-form writing, or you want MCP connectors into your own stack.

Choose ChatGPT if you want one well-rounded assistant with a coding agent included at every tier, or you need a budget tier with Codex.

Choose Gemini if you’re a Google Workspace user, want 5 TB of storage and media generation bundled, or want the cheapest paid entry point.

For a two-way breakdown, read Claude vs Gemini.

If you choose Claude

Most of Claude’s advantage for power users comes from setup: a short CLAUDE.md, a few skills, the right MCP servers. The Claude kit hub shows how to assemble that, and Getting started with Claude Code gets you to your first change in minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Which is best: Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini?

There's no single winner. Claude suits people who write, analyse and code and want a deeply customisable agent. ChatGPT suits people who want the broadest all-round assistant and its Codex coding agent. Gemini suits Google Workspace users and anyone who values bundled storage, media generation and low-cost tiers.

Which is cheapest?

As of October 24, 2026, all three have a free plan. The cheapest paid tiers are Google AI Plus at $4.99 and ChatGPT Go at $8 a month; Claude has no low-cost tier. Standard plans cluster around $20: Claude Pro $20 ($17 annually), ChatGPT Plus $20 and Google AI Pro $19.99.

Which has the best coding agent?

All three have strong ones: Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and Google's Gemini CLI, Jules and Antigravity. Claude Code is the most configurable, Codex is included with ChatGPT plans from Free upwards, and Gemini CLI is open source with a free daily quota. Test them on your own repo.

Can I use more than one?

Yes, and many professionals do: one paid plan as the daily driver plus the free tiers of the other two for second opinions. Your files, prompts and MCP servers largely carry across.
