MCP servers for Claude

MCP servers connect Claude to the tools and data you already use, through the open Model Context Protocol. Pick a server below, then add it to Claude Code with claude mcp add or generate the config in your browser. New to MCP? Start with what MCP is and how it works.

How to add a server to Claude Code

# remote server
claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url>
# local server
claude mcp add <name> -- <command> [args...]

The default scope is local (you, this project). Add --scope project to share the server through a committed .mcp.json, or --scope user for all your projects. Then run /mcp in Claude Code to check the connection and sign in to OAuth servers.

Frequently asked questions

What is an MCP server?

An MCP server exposes tools and data from another system, such as GitHub, a database or a browser, through the Model Context Protocol, an open standard. Claude connects to it as a client and can then call its tools.

How do I add an MCP server to Claude Code?

Run claude mcp add in your terminal. A remote server uses --transport http with a name and URL; a local server takes a name, then -- and the command that starts it. Run /mcp inside Claude Code to check the connection.

Which scope should I use?

Local is the default and keeps the server to you in the current project. Project scope writes a .mcp.json file that your team shares through git. User scope makes the server available in all of your projects.

How many MCP servers should I install?

As few as the job needs. Each server adds tool definitions to Claude’s context and is another credential and trust decision, so start with one or two and add more when a task calls for them.
