SKILL.md Generator

Build a valid SKILL.md for Claude Code or any Agent Skills client. The name is checked against the spec as you type, and the preview shows exactly what to save.

Private by design: nothing you type is uploaded or tracked. Your draft is saved only in this browser.

Target

Lowercase letters, digits and single hyphens, up to 64 characters. Also the folder name.

How to use the SKILL.md generator

  1. Choose Claude Code for a skill in .claude/skills/, or Portable to upload it to claude.ai or the API.
  2. Enter a name. Invalid characters are flagged immediately; "Fix it for me" turns any text into a valid name.
  3. Write the description as a search snippet: what the skill does first, then the words people actually type.
  4. Add step-by-step instructions and, only if needed, the tools Claude may use without asking.
  5. Create the folder shown under "Folder layout", save the download inside it as SKILL.md, then test with /your-skill-name.

Why the description matters most

Only the name and description are loaded for every skill at startup; the body loads when the skill is invoked. Claude decides whether to use your skill from the description alone, so lead with the use case and include trigger phrases. The Claude Code skills guide covers every frontmatter field, arguments and running a skill in a subagent.

Frequently asked questions

What is a SKILL.md file?

SKILL.md is the required file in an Agent Skill folder. YAML frontmatter holds the name and description Claude uses to decide when to load the skill; the Markdown body holds the instructions Claude follows once it does.

What are the rules for a skill name?

Per the Agent Skills specification, the name is 1 to 64 characters of lowercase letters, digits and hyphens, cannot start or end with a hyphen, cannot contain two hyphens in a row, and must match the folder name. Names containing "anthropic" or "claude" are rejected by claude.ai and the Claude API.

Should I choose Claude Code or Portable?

Claude Code keeps when-to-use in its own when_to_use field, which only Claude Code reads. Portable merges it into the description and uses only fields from the open standard, so the same file works when uploaded to claude.ai, the Claude API or other agents that support Agent Skills.

What does allowed-tools do?

In Claude Code, allowed-tools lists tools Claude may use without a permission prompt during the turn that invokes the skill, for example Bash(git status *) Read. It is experimental in the open standard, so other tools may ignore it. Grant as little as the skill needs.

Where do I put the generated file?

Create a folder with the same name as the skill under .claude/skills/ in your project (shared with your team through git) or ~/.claude/skills/ for all your projects, and save the file inside it as SKILL.md. For claude.ai, zip the folder and upload it in Settings.
