Install

/plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills

The xlsx skill covers any task where a spreadsheet file is the main input or output. It is part of Anthropic’s document skills and is opinionated about one thing in particular: formulas in the finished file should work.

What it does

  • Opens, reads, edits and fixes .xlsx, .xlsm, .xltx, .csv and .tsv files: adding columns, computing formulas, formatting, charting.
  • Creates spreadsheets from scratch or from other data sources.
  • Converts between tabular formats.
  • Cleans messy data: malformed rows, misplaced headers, junk values.
  • Recalculates whenever formulas are present, and includes guidance for financial models and openpyxl pitfalls.

Install

/plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills
/plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills

This installs xlsx alongside pdf, docx and pptx. On claude.ai the capability is available on paid plans. See the skills guide.

Example usage

Clean up the xlsx in my downloads: fix the headers and remove blank rows
Build a 12-month cash flow model with formulas, not hard-coded numbers
Merge these three CSV exports into one spreadsheet with a summary sheet and a chart

Tips

  • Say whether you want live formulas or static values.
  • Reference the file by path; the skill triggers even on casual mentions such as “the spreadsheet in my downloads”.
  • For SQL-sourced data, query first (for example via DBHub), then hand the export to this skill.

Its description lists .xlsx, .xlsm, .xltx, .csv and .tsv files as inputs or outputs, with a spreadsheet file as the deliverable.

Will formulas actually calculate?

The skill makes recalculation mandatory whenever a file contains formulas and guides Claude toward formulas that survive verification.

Should I use it for Google Sheets?

No. The skill says not to trigger for Google Sheets API integrations, database pipelines or when the deliverable is a Word document or HTML report.
