AWS MCP Servers: Official AWS Tools for Claude Code

AWS MCP Servers (awslabs/mcp) is AWS’s open-source collection of Model Context Protocol servers. Instead of one monolithic server, it offers dozens of focused servers: documentation and knowledge lookup, general AWS API access, infrastructure as code, pricing, support, Bedrock knowledge bases, databases such as Aurora DSQL and Valkey, serverless, containers and more. AWS also runs a managed remote AWS MCP Server (in preview) with IAM-based permissions and CloudTrail logging.

Who it is for

Teams building on AWS who want Claude Code to read current AWS docs, author CDK or CloudFormation, check prices, or inspect resources without leaving the terminal.

Install in Claude Code

Install uv, Python and AWS credentials first. The README’s Claude Code commands include:

You can also commit a .mcp.json to your repo so the whole team gets the same servers. AWS also publishes plugins such as aws-core in Anthropic’s official marketplace.

Use cases

• IaC authoring: generate CDK with best-practice guidance and security validation from the IaC server.
• Cost questions: “What would three m7g.large instances cost per month in eu-west-1?”
• Docs lookup: answer service-limit and API questions from current documentation.
• Operations: list resources or check configuration through the API server with your IAM permissions.

Pros

• Official, Apache-2.0, very actively maintained.
• Pick only the servers you need, keeping tool lists small.
• Managed remote option adds auditability through CloudTrail.

Cons and caveats

• Many servers means choice overload; some are marked deprecated (for example Cloud Control API in favor of IaC).
• API servers act with your credentials; use a least-privilege profile.
• Each added server adds tools to context, so avoid installing all of them.
