The Azure MCP Server is Microsoft’s official Model Context Protocol server that puts tools for many Azure services in one place. It lets Claude list and inspect resources, query Cosmos DB or Azure SQL, read Key Vault and Storage, check Monitor and Advisor, and work with AKS, Container Apps and Microsoft Foundry, all with your own Azure identity.

Who it is for

Developers and cloud engineers on Azure who want Claude Code to answer questions about their real subscription, or help with deployments, without copying CLI output into the chat.

Install

The README’s Claude Code route is the Azure plugin from Anthropic’s official marketplace. Run this inside Claude Code:

/plugin install azure@claude-plugins-official

To add only the server, the README’s Node.js config works in a project .mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "azure-mcp-server": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@azure/mcp@latest", "server", "start"]
    }
  }
}

Sign in to Azure first, for example with az login. NuGet (dnx), Python (uvx), Docker and MCPB bundles are also documented.

Use cases

  • Cost and health: “Show my top 10 Advisor recommendations and what to fix first.”
  • Data checks: query a Cosmos DB container or list tables in an Azure SQL database.
  • Secrets hygiene: list Key Vault secrets that are close to expiry, without printing values.
  • Ops: inspect AKS clusters, Container Apps or Monitor logs during an incident.

Pros

  • Official, MIT licensed and maintained by Microsoft.
  • One server covers dozens of Azure services.
  • Ships as a Claude Code plugin with extra agents and skills.
  • Available through npm, NuGet, PyPI and Docker.

Cons and caveats

  • Version 3 is still a beta release.
  • It acts with your Azure permissions. Use a least-privilege role, especially in production subscriptions.
  • The large tool set can crowd your context. The VS Code extension documents a namespace mode and service filters for this.
  • Results can include sensitive configuration. Review what you share in long sessions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install it in Claude Code?

Microsoft's README recommends the Azure plugin from Anthropic's official marketplace: run /plugin install azure@claude-plugins-official inside Claude Code. It bundles the server with Azure agents and skills.

How does it authenticate?

You authenticate to Azure before starting the server. The README points to an authentication guide; one listed method is the Azure CLI after az login.

What can it change in my subscription?

Whatever your Azure RBAC permissions allow. Microsoft warns that misconfigured clients may perform destructive actions and recommends least-privilege roles.

Is it stable?

The MCP registry listed version 3.0.0-beta.48 on 24 Oct 2026, published to npm, NuGet and PyPI.
