claude-code-setup is an Anthropic plugin that answers a common first question: what should I set up in Claude Code for this project? Its skill scans your codebase and recommends the top one or two automations in each category, from hooks to MCP servers.

Checked 24 Oct 2026 against the plugin’s README, skill file and marketplace.json.

Who it is for

New Claude Code users, and anyone opening an unfamiliar repo who wants a tailored starting setup instead of a generic list.

Install

/plugin install claude-code-setup@claude-plugins-official

Then ask:

recommend automations for this project

What it does

The claude-automation-recommender skill looks at your stack and suggests:

  • MCP servers for external integrations, such as docs lookup or browser testing.
  • Skills for packaged expertise.
  • Hooks for automatic actions like auto-format, auto-lint or blocking edits to sensitive files.
  • Subagents for specialized reviews such as security, performance or accessibility.
  • Slash commands for quick workflows.

It ships reference files on hook patterns, MCP servers, plugins, skills and subagent templates, and may use web search to find recommendations specific to your libraries.

Pros

  • Read-only, so it is safe to run on any repo.
  • Short, prioritized output instead of a wall of options.
  • Good bridge to the rest of the official marketplace.

Cons and caveats

  • Recommendations only; building them is a separate step.
  • Suggestions are only as good as what it can infer from your files.

Frequently asked questions

Does it change my files?

No. The skill is read-only. It analyzes the codebase and outputs recommendations; you implement them yourself or ask Claude separately.

How many recommendations does it give?

The top 1 to 2 per category by default. If you ask about one type, such as hooks, it focuses on that type and gives 3 to 5 options.

How do I trigger it?

Ask in plain language, for example 'recommend automations for this project' or 'what hooks should I use?'.
