Plannotator is a local, browser-based review surface for coding agents, with a Claude Code plugin that hooks into plan mode. When Claude proposes a plan, it opens in your browser where you can mark it up and send your comments back; you can also review diffs, PRs and any Markdown or HTML file the same way.

Checked 24 Oct 2026 against the repo README, the Claude Code plugin README and marketplace.json.

Who it is for

Developers who use plan mode and want to give precise, line-level feedback on a plan before Claude writes code, rather than typing corrections into the chat.

Install

First install the plannotator binary (macOS, Linux, WSL):

curl -fsSL https://plannotator.ai/install.sh | bash

Then, in Claude Code:

/plugin marketplace add backnotprop/plannotator
/plugin install plannotator@plannotator

Restart Claude Code so the hooks take effect.

What it does

  • Plan review: no command needed; the plan opens for annotation whenever Claude creates one.
  • Annotate: /plannotator-annotate README.md, a folder, a URL or an HTML file; /plannotator-last annotates Claude’s last message.
  • Code review: /plannotator-review for uncommitted changes, or pass a GitHub PR or GitLab MR URL.
  • Inbox: one local window where agents leave questions and files for you to answer later.

Pros

  • Much richer feedback than chat for long plans.
  • Local by default, no telemetry, dual MIT and Apache 2.0 license.
  • Works with many other agents, not only Claude Code.

Cons and caveats

  • Two parts to install and update: the binary and the plugin.
  • Each review surface checks GitHub for new releases on load, with no opt-out for that check.
  • Link sharing is moving to deprecated support in favor of a separate hosted Workspaces product.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need anything besides the plugin?

Yes. The plugin calls the plannotator command, so install the binary first with the installer script for your OS, then add the Claude Code plugin.

Does it send my plans anywhere?

Not by default. The README says plans, diffs and annotations stay local and there is no usage telemetry. Network features like URL annotation, PR review, Ask AI and sharing send content only when you use them.

How do I update it?

Rerun the installer for the binary. For the plugin, update the plannotator marketplace and then the plugin itself; refreshing the marketplace alone does not update it.

What license is it under?

Dual-licensed under Apache 2.0 or MIT, at your option.
